How to Find a VIN Number for My Car

Learn the most common places to find the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your car, motorcycle, or commercial vehicle.

What is a VIN Number?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles. No two vehicles in operation have the same VIN.

Common Places to Find Your VIN

1. The Dashboard

The easiest place to find your VIN is on the lower corner of your dashboard on the driver's side. You can usually read it by looking through the windshield from the outside of the car.

2. The Driver's Side Door Jamb

Open the driver's side door and look at the door post (where the door latches when closed). You should see a sticker or metal plate containing the VIN and other vehicle details like tire pressure.

3. Under the Bonnet (Hood)

Open the bonnet and look at the front of the engine block. The VIN is often stamped on a metal plate attached to the engine or the chassis.

4. Vehicle Documents

If you don't have access to the car, you can find the VIN on your official documents:
  • V5C Logbook: The 17-digit VIN is prominently displayed on the front page of your UK logbook.
  • Insurance Policy: Your insurance provider uses the VIN to verify the car.
  • MOT Certificate: Previous MOT certificates will list the vehicle's VIN.
  • Why Do You Need Your VIN?

You need your VIN if you have lost your V5C logbook and need to apply for a new one, or if you want to perform a comprehensive background check on a vehicle before buying it. If you have the VIN and need to find the registration number, you can use our instant VIN to Reg lookup tool on our homepage.
